The Viet Nam Bamboo Foundation announced the official launch of the Viet Nam Bamboo Industry Development Fund in Ho Chi Minh City, on July 28.
The initiative aims to foster comprehensive and sustainable growth for the bamboo sector — a field rich of economic, cultural, and environmental potential.
According to the Viet Nam Bamboo Foundation’s representative, bamboo is a fast-renewable resource with strong carbon absorption capacity. It helps prevent soil erosion, restores degraded land, and is well suited to Viet Nam’s ecological and climatic conditions.
However, the bamboo industry in Viet Nam remains fragmented, lacking a long-term strategic direction and far from realising its full potential. The establishment of the Viet Nam Bamboo Industry Development Fund is intended to harness community power and mobilise social resources, positioning bamboo as a green development solution, a source of local livelihoods, and a pillar of sustainable environmental protection.
The fund will focus on three core areas: community support and reforestation, promoting sustainable bamboo cultivation among local communities, especially ethnic minority groups in upland areas, thereby enhancing livelihoods and protecting upstream forests; value-added bamboo products — developing eco-friendly goods such as furniture, homeware, fashion, and food, and expanding markets both domestically and internationally; and cultural revival and education, reconnecting industry players, reviving traditional bamboo craft villages, fostering eco-tourism, and educating the younger generation on the role of bamboo in modern life and sustainable development trends.
Operating as a non-profit social enterprise, the Viet Nam Bamboo Industry Development Fund is committed to serving community interests and contributing to the broader sustainable development agenda.
The initiative is also part of the lead-up to World Bamboo Day, which is observed annually on September 18.
As part of this effort, the Viet Nam Bamboo Forum has also been scheduled, aiming to bring together experts, civil society organisations, businesses, and policymakers from both Viet Nam and abroad to exchange innovative and effective strategies for developing a resilient, creative, and sustainable bamboo industry.
